Giro d’Italia delivers a gale force finish at stage 3

Picture
The final day on the island of Sardinia certainly produced a dramatic finale to three days of spectacular scenery and aggressive racing.

The wind on stage three into Cagliari, was extreme with gusts in excess of 70 kph. Everyone knew that the Quickstep team would light it up in the final 20 km, when a change of direction turned what had been a full-on tail wind into a damaging gale force side wind, not many could do much about it.

Another hit to Caleb at The Giro

Picture
Sardinia has been an amazing experience for most on the 100th Giro d’Italia, but not for the Orica Scott team, and specifically their gun sprinter Caleb Ewan.

A tactical mistake on stage one cost the dynamic young sprinter from Bowral a certain victory, and in stage 2, a mechanical in the final 200 meters cost him another.

100th Giro d’Italia: Sardinia a sea of pink
John Trevorrow, On Tour, Geelong Advertiser

THE island of Sardinia is bathed in pink today as it hosts the first stage of the 100th Giro d’Italia.
Pink is the colour of the Giro, similarly to yellow being the colour of the Tour de France and for the same reasons.

The Tour was first run as a promotion for a daily sports paper called La Auto. Its pages were yellow so that soon became the colour of the leader’s jersey. The event captured the imagination of European sports fans so the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport started their own version and it also was embraced by the Italian sport mad “Tifossi”.

Its pages were pink and so the leader’s jersey, the Maglia Rosa, and the flavour of the race are also pink.
I have a serious love affair with the “Giro” — I raced it 36 years ago and have covered six for the Addy over
the years.

And although always referred to as the bridesmaid to the Tour de France, it has a beautiful element that makes it quite special — the passion.

Simon Gerrans will be joining teammate Esteban Chaves at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Gerrans, a two-time winner of the stage race has expressed his excitement to be back racing in Victoria and is feeling optimistic about his current form.

One thing he is not as optimistic about is his suitability to the new Jayco Herald Sun Tour course:

“You can never rule anything out and I’ll never say it’s not possible to win, but looking at the course I think it’s going to be a two-rider race to be honest with you,” Gerrans said in reference to the Froome-Chaves battle which is expected to roar through Victoria in February.

One thing is for certain, you can never underestimate Simon Gerrans and we look forward to seeing him have a great start to the season in Victoria.

Reigning Tour de France champion Chris Froome has confirmed he will race the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race next year.

Froome, a three-time winner of the world’s biggest race, will launch his 2017 campaign and fourth yellow jersey assault in Geelong on Sunday, 29 January.

The 31-year-old will lead defending champions Team Sky, who won in 2016 with Peter Kennaugh.

“I’m really looking forward to starting my season in Australia again,” Froome said.

“I love riding in Australia. The weather is great and the crowds always come out in force to support the riders. That makes it all the more enjoyable."

Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren, welcomed the announcement and confirmed the three time Tour de France winner and Olympic bronze medallist will compete solely in Victoria this summer.

“Sport’s biggest and best names belong in Victoria. Chris Froome is a giant of world cycling, and we’re delighted he’s racing exclusively here in Victoria,” Mr Eren said.

“Our cycling events aren’t just great spectacles, they’re big boosts to the economy, too – and that puts people first. The big races give regional and rural communities their chance to shine.”
